How to get to Strasbourg and Colmar?

You will find below the different ways to get to the French region of Alsace.

By plane

Flying is one of the fastest and cheapest ways to get to Strasbourg and Colmar, but depending on the airport, prices can vary considerably.

Alsace is accessible from two main airports: EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (BSL) and Strasbourg Airport (SXB). However, due to its proximity to Germany, it is also accessible from Frankfurt/Main airport (FRA) via a shuttle bus service, or from Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden airport (FKB).

By train

The three main cities of the Alsace region, Strasbourg, Colmar and Mulhouse, are connected to Paris by the TGV INOUI (high-speed train) of the French public railway company SNCF

Trains leave from Paris Gare de l'Est for Strasbourg (there is only one main station). The average travel time is 1 hour 46 minutes. From Strasbourg, take a regional express train (TER) towards Basel to reach Colmar or Mulhouse. The journey takes 30 minutes and 1 hour respectively.

✨ ✨ In 2013, the French national railway company SNCF launched the OUIGO brand, which offers connections between Paris and Strasbourg at a very affordable price. The only drawback concerns the rather tight schedules.

By coach

One of the cheapest options is to travel by bus. However, it is not one of the fastest options. One company monopolizes bus transportation from other cities in France and Germany. This is Flixbus, which offers more than reasonable prices, but with a fairly long travel time and often a connection in Paris Bercy.

By Road

Sharing its borders with Germany and Switzerland, Alsace is connected to several major highways (the French A4 and A36, the Swiss A3 and the German A5). Within Alsace region, the A35 is the main axis linking the main cities from north to south. Of these four highways, only the A35 and the A5 are toll-free.
